Of Ants and Aardvarks….

This week we spent time with rhythm, scarves and movement. Students picked two light-weight, neon scarves as they came into the gym.  We listened to music and moved to the beat–walking, skipping, galloping, swaying, balancing, twirling, stretching–even dancing–and experienced the joy in our movement.  The colors were beautiful flying around the gym and the smiles on their faces showed the joy.

At the end of the class, we played a game that helped students develop awareness of others in an exciting game of “ant hospital.”  We appointed 2 Aardvarks whose job it was to tag Ants.  Once tagged, the ants laid on their backs and chanted, “help.”  Four others were needed to pick up their “sick ant” and deliver him/her to the nearest “hospital”–a mat.  Once there, the ant was healed and could rejoin the game.  It was great to see the students looking for classmates to help….after all, its all about working together!
